Executive Committee

The executive committee provides leadership and direction to the annual Kansas John Phillip Sousa Junior Honor Band. Comprised of a chair and 10-12 Kansas band directors, members are selected by recommendation and then accepted by executive board members. The chairperson is determined by the executive board.

Meetings: As needed. Debriefing meeting held every February, date set by the chair.

Voting: When it is necessary to adjust guidelines; a majority must be present at the meeting. Absentee voting will be accepted by email, fax or mail.

Compensation: Participation is voluntary. No one will receive compensation for carrying out his/her responsibilities. Compensation will be extended for out of pocket expenditures for honor band operations.

Chair is responsible for organization and supervision of appropriate processes for annual event to include but not restricted to:

  1. Hosting organizational meetings
  2. Recommending honor band clinicians
  3. Assigning additional workers (directors) for the event
  4. Recommending additions to executive and advisory boards
  5. Securing event facilities
  6. Communicating with the Sousa Foundation, Gladys Wright

As part of the committee, the following jobs may be assigned:

Stuffing and delivering event music folders to band directors
Collecting and sorting music after the event
Attending rehearsals, monitoring bands, managing percussion, etc.
Driving and delivering percussion
Ordering and/or delivering student and director lunches
Organizing, delivering and setting up food for Friday evening director’s meeting
Organizing and handling CD and picture sales
Organizing and handling band shirts
Designing and printing programs

Hosting auditions
Hosting clinicians
Organizing and handling awards
Organizing and providing volunteers (Lied Center)
Soliciting donations
Organizing guest performance for students
Contacting photographer and recording technician
Mailing CDs and pictures to band directors
Signing contract for Lied Center
Maintaining the website
Providing Public Relations


Advisory Committee

The Advisory Board is comprised of 8 or 10 band directors, music merchants and other support personnel who provide direction as needed. They are nominated by the chair and/or executive board and voted on by the board.
